Doing really good stuff.

Plymouth Book Club - Body and Soul

Monday, October 14, 7:00 p.m.

Join Plymouth's Book Club for a discussion about Body and Soul by Frank Conroy. A prolific writer, Conroy was born in 1936, publishing his first book Stop-Time, a memoir, in 1967. He was the director of the Iowa Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa for 18 years and is also an accomplished jazz pianist. Body and Soul is set in1940s New York, a city that is "long gone, replaced by another city of the same name." Against a backdrop that pulses with sound and rhythm, Body and Soul brilliantly evokes the life of a child prodigy whose musical genius pulls him out of squalor and into the drawing rooms of the rich and a gilt-edged marriage. Explore the life of this young musician. We hope you will join us! Our books are available at Schuler Books on the Book Club Table at a 20% discount.

How Are the Children?

Sunday, October 27, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

In 2017, delegates to the United Church of Christ General Synod passed a Resolution of Witness calling for an end to the ill-treatment of Palestinian children incarcerated in Israeli military prisons. On October 27, the Justice and Peace Task Force presents, "How Are The Children?" produced by the United Church of Christ Palestine Israel Network in cooperation with national executive leaders and mission personnel of the UCC. The video presentation features the stories of four Palestinian youth and their families undergoing the ordeal of Israeli military incarceration. It explores why the UCC and other faith communities are calling urgently for an end to this systematic abuse of children. This is one in a series of Plymouth programs which will focus on the theme "how are the children?" and proposes that a society that prioritizes caring for its young and powerless members is a society at peace. All are welcome to join the conversation.

The other will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 23 and 30, and November 6 and 13 at the home of one of our members.  Each session will focus on 3 chapters of the book, so you have plenty of time to do the reading.
